Neuhaus’ Chocolate Cocktails make every occasion a celebration

The classic liquor praline with a modern twist

We've all tasted them — the traditional liqueur chocolates that linger in the mouth like a strong shot of booze. Neuhaus, the inventor of the Belgian praline, decided to reinvent these classic chocolates, drawing inspiration from trendy cocktail recipes. For this one-of-a-kind collection, Neuhaus joined forces with the renowned Belgian mixologist family Van Ongevalle. Because whenever you reinvent a classic, you need the help of experts.

“Every old idea has its revival at some point,” explains mixologist Ran Van Ongevalle. “What makes this story so special is how we upgraded the liqueur praline from a single ingredient to a thoughtful and balanced chocolate cocktail.”

Chocolate and cocktails, a match made in heaven

In this innovative collection, the rich flavours of premium chocolate are masterfully complemented by the spicy notes of spirits and garnishes. “Much like a Maître Chocolatier, we take a meticulous approach to creating an original cocktail. Knowing your ingredients is crucial,” says Hannah Van Ongevalle. "We strive for balance and harmony in the flavour combinations we concoct,” adds Ran Van Ongevalle. Because, to convey an experience as it should, every detail counts, from the shape of the praline to the glass in which a cocktail is served.

Five exclusive chocolate cocktails

For the Gin Provence, Hannah Van Ongevalle was inspired by cool summer mornings in Provence, with lavender in bloom and dew glistening in the fields. This inventive interpretation of the Gin Fizz brings together rich fondant, spiced gin and mescal, and sweet, floral lavender. “Lavender and fondant are a perfect match for me, and Neuhaus chocolate highlights the gin's herbal notes,” says Hannah.

Do you prefer the iconic Cosmopolitan? The Vodka Rosie, Hannah's second praline, might be just the thing for you. This white chocolate praline contains dark chocolate ganache, infused with vodka, currants, and violets. “I really wanted to emphasise the sweet, floral notes and flavours,” says Hannah. “For me, fruity violets make a wonderful pairing with white chocolate.”

Do you like it stronger? Inspired by the legendary Old Fashioned cocktail, The Whisky Midnight combines the oaky notes of whisky with the rich flavour of Belgian fondant and a bite of lime. A jazz enthusiast, Noa Van Ongevalle found inspiration in her love of the music. “The Old Fashioned was all the rage in the 50s — the era of my idols Ray Charles, Etta James, and Ella Fitzgerald. This chocolate cocktail is an homage to the icons of the time, and to the cocktail that sparked my love for cocktails.”

The Rum Clarita, too, is a real treat. A unique absinthe tinge enhances the dominant notes of rum and sherry in this praline. Having won the Bacardi Legacy Global Cocktail Competition in 2017, we knew this flavour combination had to be part of the Chocolate Cocktails collection. “Alone, rum and chocolate are an excellent combination. When you add salt and anise, that's when it really gets fun,” says creator Ran Van Ongevalle.

Last but not least, the Saké Sunrise transports you to far-off Japan. “It’s the perfect picture: a canoe on the water, bobbing between islands, with a breathtaking sunrise on the horizon above,” says Jan Van Ongevalle. “To capture that atmosphere, I wanted to create a cpraline that highlighted Neuhaus chocolate, as well as the other ingredients.” The combination of crisp yuzu, smoky sake, zesty Japanese plum wine, and sweet milk chocolate is delightfully invigorating. Imagining yourself in Asia is easy. Just close your eyes.

Bon vivants' delight

About NEUHAUS

From its origins as a pharmacist to its present calling as a chocolatier, Neuhaus has always put caring for others and ensuring their wellbeing first. The family opened its first Neuhaus boutique in 1857 in the famous Galerie de la Reine in Brussels. To the delight of his customers, Jean Neuhaus cased his medicines in a thin layer of chocolate. In 1912, his grandson went one step further transforming this concept into the Belgian praline as we know it today, replacing the medicine in the chocolate casing with a delicious filling.

Neuhaus, the inventor of the Belgian praline, continues to pursue its goal of demonstrating its leadership qualities in the chocolate market by encouraging innovation and creating exciting new products with only natural ingredients.

Neuhaus and Belgium have been inextricably linked for more than 160 years - ever since our founder Jean Neuhaus opened his first boutique in the Galerie de la Reine in Brussels. Our pralines and truffles have always been crafted with consideration and respect in Belgium and we are firmly committed to upholding this tradition.
